T-minus four days

The Novel Push Initiative:

NPI is a mere four days away.

Packsister and I are going to push our novels’ word counts forward from March 1st through March 31st.

The goal is to write at least 250 words (or half a page) per day. If we miss reporting our progress via our blogs even a single day, we’re knocked out of the event.

If I can’t handle this, I guess I have no business entering NaNoWriMo.

So this is a test for me.

And I’m excited.

And nervous.

The Writing Contest:

This time last year, my college hosted a writing contest that I entered. It was the first time I’d ever submitted any piece of writing anywhere, so it was a big step for me.

The contest was very general: Contestants could either enter a poem, a song they’ve written, a short story, a speech, or even a research paper.

How they can pit together and judge all these wildly different things subjectively, I’ll never know. But I figure now that I know a few more tricks, it can’t hurt to try again.

The Fiction Writer:

My college is also hosting a small event on March 2nd where a local fiction writer/poet (Steve Davenport) is coming to talk with students and answer some questions. I figure if anyone at my college can stand to gain something from this event, it’s me.

And who knows? Maybe I’ll get to meet some like-minded local writers.

  1. It’ll be a test for both our endurance. And I guess it won’t kill me to actually click twice to find out the word count of what I’ll be writing. And by the end of it we’ll both be proud of ourselves, ’cause I’ve done something like that by myself once and it was a great time.

  2. *hugs* Agreed. No matter the outcome, we’ll be proud we decided to do this :)

  3. I’m marveled at your dedication, especially because I haven’t even started on my novel, and even if I had, I don’t feel that I would be capable of adding 250+ words per day to it.

So they’re hosting another writing competition? Are you going to enter “Go Big Blue,” or is it going to be a brand new piece?

  4. Dedication indeed! I should do something like this for myself. Instead of writing a novel, just try writing something for myself. I’ve always wanted to strengthen my writing ability and maybe I can think of some way to keep me motivated and hopefully be able to do something like that.

Your determination is pretty inspiring. I hope all goes well and you reach your goal!

  5. @christopher: Though I have polished and revised the heck out of ‘Big Blue’ since you last saw it, it’s got a lot of adult content, probably not appropriate for a college competition, you know?
A brand new piece isn’t looking like a viable option, either. Because I won’t be able to complete a new story and get it polished enough to be submittal-ready by March 3rd.
So I’ll probably use ‘En Prise’, which is my most polished piece at this point and the one I’m most proud of. Last year, I entered a pretty crappy story called ‘An Escape from Reality’. ^_^; I’m sure ‘En Prise’ will fare better.
And thank you, I really couldn’t do all this hard work without you guys pushing me along!

Heyyyy, wanna join in NPI? You could just freewrite a new piece and do 250 words a day. If you only make it a few days, no loss, right? riiiight? :)

  7. Whoa, whoa. I missed the original post for this (thank a dodgy RSS feed my end for that)

Dude, I am in on this here NPI. I just started writing again – as of my ‘Dayman’ post – and this would fit perfectly into my writing schedule. I could use the extra kick, whilst enjoying the comradery of it all and well, it just sounds ‘fun’ too.

    Coolbeans.
